Ion Cutelaba says he's fighting Gadzhimurad Antigulov at UFC 217 in NYC

A light heavyweight bout between is apparently the latest addition to November’s UFC 217 lineup. Ion Cutelaba has announced a matchup with Gadzhimurad Antigulov.

UFC officials has not formally announced the bout, but Cutelaba (13-3 MMA, 2-2 UFC) revealedon social media that he’s fighting Antigulov (20-4 MMA, 2-0 UFC) later this year.

UFC 217 takes place Nov. 4 at Madison Square Garden in New York City. The main card airs on pay-per-view following prelims on FS1 and UFC Fight Pass, though the bout order hasn’t been finalized.

Cutelaba has had an up-and-down run since joining the UFC in June 2016. He’s alternated wins and losses over his four-fight tenure but is coming off a 22-second knockout victory over Henrique da Silva at UFC Fight Night 110 in June.

Antigulov, meanwhile, has had a hot start to his UFC tenure, winning consecutive fights by first-round submission. He made his debut with a 67-second win over Marcos Rogerio de Lima in November and then proceeded to submit Joachim Christensen in just over two minutes at UFC 211 in May. The Russian has won 14 consecutive fights dating back to April 2013.

The latest UFC 217 card now includes:

  • Champ Michael Bisping vs. Georges St-Pierre – for middleweight title
  • Champ Cody Garbrandt vs. T.J. Dillashaw – for bantamweight title
  • Paulo Borrachinha vs. Johny Hendricks
  • Gadzhimurad Antigulov vs. Ion Cutelaba

Sean Shelby's Shoes: What's next for Kelvin Gastelum and UFC on FOX 25's other losing fighters?

(ALSO SEE: Sean Shelby’s Shoes: What next for UFC on FOX 25’s winning fighters?)

Saturday’s four-fight UFC on FOX 25 main card was poised for competitive matchups, and that for the most part that’s how it played out until Chris Weidman (14-3 MMA, 10-3 UFC) produced a statement stoppage of Kelvin Gastelum (13-3 MMA, 8-3 UFC) in the FOX-televised middleweight headliner at NYCB LIVE in Uniondale, N.Y.

Earlier on the card, Dennis Bermudez (16-7 MMA, 9-5 UFC) suffered his fourth setback in his past six fights, Gian Villante (15-9 MMA, 5-6 UFC) was edged on the scorecard, and Thomas Almeida (21-2 MMA, 5-2 UFC) experienced just his second loss as a pro.

After every event, fans wonder whom the losers will be matched up with next. And with another night of UFC action in the rearview mirror, it’s time to look forward, put on a pair of Sean Shelby and Mick Maynard’s shoes, and play UFC matchmaker for UFC on FOX 25’s losing fighters.

* * * *

Thomas Almeida

Rob Font

Should fight: Rob Font
Why they should fight: Almeida suffered just the second loss of his 23-fight career when he succumbed to the incredible winning streak of Jimmie Rivera in a crucial bantamweight contest.

The Brazilian is still one of the brightest prospects at 135 pounds, but unfortunately Rivera is looking nearly unstoppable at this point and he fell victim to that momentum by unanimous decision. Whether he wins or loses, Almeida is one of the most exciting fighters in the sport and delivers every time he steps in the octagon.

Font (14-2 MMA, 4-1 UFC) doesn’t have the same following, but he’s proven to be someone who brings it every time, as well. He’s well rounded and dynamic, and a matchup with Almeida would be absolute fireworks.

Gian Villante

Ion Cutelaba

Should fight: Ion Cutelaba
Why they should fight: Villante suffered his third loss in his past four fights when he dropped a split decision to Patrick Cummins in an important bout for his position in the light-heavyweight division.

Villante has had some solid moments throughout his UFC tenure. Unfortunately, his track record has shown that he falls short when the lights shine brightest, and it comes to a point when a fighter only receives a certain amount of chances.

Villante has had difficulty evolving past a brawling style of fighter. His style has only failed him against proven oppositions, though, and Cutelaba (13-3 MMA, 2-2 UFC) is not yet that. “The Hulk” is an interesting prospect at 23 years old, and if he could beat Villante, it would be a real reason to start paying attention.

Dennis Bermudez

Mirsad Bektic

Should fight: Mirsad Bektic
Why they should fight: Bermudez experienced disappointment in front of a supportive crowd when he dropped a second consecutive fight, this time courtesy of Darren Elkins.

“The Menace” has had his ups and downs inside the octagon, and after the split-decision result, he’s currently enduring another rough patch. He’s always found a way to rally back, though, and in a loaded featherweight division, there’s plenty of opportunity to do that.

Bektic (11-1 MMA, 4-1 UFC) is also coming off a loss to Elkins, albeit in a much more stunning fashion at UFC 209 in March. Bektic is still considered one of the brightest prospects at 145 pounds, and a fight with “The Ultimate Fighter 14” finalist Bermudez would represent a chance for him to recover some of what was lost in his first career setback against Elkins.

Kelvin Gastelum

Should fight: Gunnar Nelson
Why they should fight: Watch the video above to see why Gastelum should drop back to welterweight and fight Nelson (16-3-1 MMA, 7-3 UFC) next.

Ion Cutelaba expected Henrique da Silva to last a little longer – 'at least half a minute'

brightcove.createExperiences();
Filed under: Featured Videos, News, UFC, Videos

AUCKLAND, New Zealand – Ion Cutelaba knew Saturday’s UFC Fight Night 110 scrap with Henrique da Silva could be a quick one – but maybe, you know, not 22-second quick.

“I knew what to expect from a myself,” Cutelaba told MMAjunkie through an interpreter after the FS1-televised main-card light-heavyweight scrap. “I know how strong of a fighter I am, but I expected my opponent to stay (in the fight) a little longer – at least a half minute or minute.”

Cutelaba (13-3 MMA, 2-2 UFC) took no notice of da Silva (12-3 MMA, 2-3 UFC), dropping him early and landing punches until referee Mark Craig had no choice but to step in. The fight electrified Saturday’s crowd at Spark Arena in Auckland, New Zealand (via Twitter):

Cutelaba’s octagon appearance before the demolition of da Silva had ended via a unanimous decision favoring The Ultimate Fighter 24 Finale opponent Jared Cannonier. It was the second loss of his octagon career, after Misha Cirkunov spoiled his debut via third-round submission.

After recovering in style, however, Cutelaba said we shouldn’t expect that kind of negative outcome moving forward.

“You should remember my name, because I’ll be the next UFC champion,” Cutelaba said. “I’m still young. I’m only 23. There’s still lots of time. I’m still quite inexperienced. No one has a chance. I’ll be the next champion.”

Clearly, there’s no lack of confidence in Cutelaba’s speech. But, when it came time to discuss his post-fight celebration plans, the light heavyweight showed that behind the big talk lies a big heart too.

“The most important celebration is to hug my wife and my daughter,” Cutelaba said. “I called my wife after the fight, already. I’m doing everything for my family.”

UFC Fight Night 110 results: Ion Cutelaba destroys Henrique da Silva in 22 seconds

Ion Cutelaba’s fast start made for a quick night for Henrique da Silva.

Cutelaba (13-3 MMA, 2-2 UFC) needed just 22 seconds to knock down da Silva (12-3 MMA, 2-3 UFC) and put him away with punches on the mat for a violent finish.

The light-heavyweight bout was part of today’s UFC Fight Night 110 main card, which took place at Spark Arena in Auckland, New Zealand. It aired on FS1 following early prelims on UFC Fight Pass.

In one of the first punching exchanges of the fight, Cutelaba pressed forward behind a right hand followed by a left hook to the jaw that dropped da Silva. Cutelaba wasted no time jumping on his wounded foe, and as he stood in da Silva’s open guard he rained down punches as a woozy da Silva searched for some shelter.

He would find none, and with the punishment coming fast and furious, referee Mark Craig had no choice but to step in and wave it off, giving Cutelaba a fast finish and sudden victory.

The win is Cutelaba’s first since a decision loss to Jared Cannonier in December. It’s the third straight loss for da Silva.

When it comes to Saturday’s UFC Fight Night 110 heavyweight headliner, fans are split – almost exactly down the middle.

Derrick Lewis (18-4 MMA, 9-2 UFC) is the overwhelming 8-2 choice over Mark Hunt (12-11-1 MMA, 7-5-1 UFC) in the MMAjunkie staff picks. However, among MMAjunkie readers, Hunt is a tiny 50.5 percent to 49.5 percent favorite.

UFC Fight Night 110 takes place at Spark Arena in Auckland, New Zealand, and it airs on FS1 following early prelims on UFC Fight Pass.

Also on the card and in the middleweight co-headliner, Derek Brunson (16-5 MMA, 7-3 UFC) is the 7-3 choice over a very live ‘dog in the resurgent Daniel Kelly (13-1 MMA, 6-1 UFC).

Additionally, Dan Hooker (13-7 MMA, 3-3 UFC) is a 6-4 pick over lightweight Ross Pearson (19-13 MMA, 11-10 UFC), light heavyweight Ion Cutelaba (12-3 MMA, 1-2 UFC) is a unanimous choice over Henrique da Silva (12-2 MMA, 2-2 UFC), former flyweight title challenger Tim Elliott (14-7-1 MMA, 3-5 UFC) is the 8-2 pick over Ben Nguyen (16-6 MMA, 3-1 UFC), and featherweight Alex Volkanovski (14-1 MMA, 1-0 UFC) is the 10-0 choice over Mizuto Hirota (14-1 MMA, 1-0 UFC).
