Bellator 182's Chidi Njokuani on why he wouldn't encourage his kids to become fighters

After a slew of health issues, UFC flyweight Ian McCall recently opened about being afraid of the long-term damage that a career in MMA could end up causing to his brain.

McCall didn’t place the blame of his issues entirely on the sport. But, in a chat on “The MMA Hour”, he did question his decision to even go down that career path in the first place. Revealing episodes that ranged from “out-of-nowhere crying” and rage, McCall cited the case of Chris Benoit – the pro-wrestler who committed suicide after murdering his wife and child – to explain his fears.

While not many fighters have been as candid and open about it, it’s hard to believe that most of them haven’t at least stop to consider the possible repercussions of their day-to-day routines at some point.

Bellator 182’s Chidi Njokuani, at least, can certainly say he has. A lot. And while he won’t go so far as to say he regrets his career choice – which has done “a lot of good” for him – he wouldn’t exactly recommend it to his loved ones.

“I think about the boxers that are dying recently,” Njokuani told MMAjunkie Radio. “It’s crazy to me. For instance, if I were to have a kid, if they were trying to get into fighting, I’d encourage them not to. But I’m not just going to go out and say it’s the worst thing to be doing. But I think about it a lot.”

Njokuani (17-4-1 MMA, 4-0 BMMA), who enters the Aug. 25 headliner with former Bellator champion Andrey Koreshkov (19-2 MMA, 10-2 BMMA) on the strength of a nine-fight unbeaten streak, says these concerns have had direct implications not only on his training, but also on the way he goes about taking shots.

“I see people in the gym getting dropped left and right,” Njokuani said. “And it’s like, that can’t be good for them. It can’t be good, getting rocked, taking a little break and then jumping back into sparring. It goes through my mind a lot.

“At the same time, it helps me work on my defense, too. I’m constantly trying not to get hit. Not that I’m afraid of getting hit, (but) I just know the damage that it can do to you.”

To hear more of Njokuani’s thoughts, including his expectations for Bellator 182’s headliner, check out the video above.

'Bellator 182: Koreshkov vs. Njokuani' lineup finalized with 13 (!) prelims

The lineup for Bellator’s next fight card is finalized, and 17 bouts are now official for next month’s event.

Bellator 182 takes place Aug. 25 at Turning Stone Resort Casino in Verona, N.Y. The main card airs on Spike following prelims that stream on MMAjunkie.

MMAjunkie confirmed two news additions with a Bellator official. The matchups round out of the preliminary card.

First, Joey Davis (1-0 MMA, 1-0 BMMA), who went 113-0 as an amateur Division II wrestler at Notre Dame College of Ohio, returns to action one year after his pro debut to face Justin Roswell (1-1 MMA, 0-1 BMMA) in a 175-pound catchweight affair.

Also, in the women’s flyweight division, Kristi Lopez (2-0 MMA, 0-0 BMMA) ends a more than three-year hiatus from competition to face Carmela James (0-2 MMA, 0-2 BMMA), who has already gone winless in two fights this year – one of which came at Bellator 171 in January.

The complete Bellator 182 lineup now includes:

MAIN CARD (Spike, 9 p.m. ET)

  • Andrey Koreshkov vs. Chidi Njokuani
  • Fernando Gonzalez vs. Brennan Ward
  • A.J. McKee vs. Blair Tugman
  • Veta Arteaga vs. Bruna Ellen

PRELIMINARY CARD (MMAjunkie, 7 p.m. ET)

  • Arlene Blencowe vs. Sinead Kavanagh
  • Henry Corrales vs. Noad Lahat
  • Kate Jackson vs. Colleen Schneider
  • Kevin Casey vs. Chris Honeycutt
  • Georgi Karakhanyan vs. Daniel Pineda
  • Gabrielle Holloway vs. Talita Nogueira
  • Tom Regal vs. Kastriot Xhema
  • Brandon Polcare vs. Mike Taylor
  • Ricky Rainey vs. Marc Stevens
  • Philipe Lins vs. Vadim Nemkov
  • Matt Secor vs. T.J. Summer
  • Joey Davis vs. Justin Roswell

Bellator 182 adds unbeaten A.J. McKee vs. Blair Tugman

Rising featherweight star A.J. McKee is set to take on Blair Tugman at Bellator 182, the promotion announced today.

Bellator 182 takes place Aug. 25 at Turning Stone Resort Casino in Verona, N.Y. The event’s main card, which will feature McKee (8-0 MMA, 8-0 BMMA) against Tugman (10-6 MMA, 5-2 BMMA), airs live on Spike following prelims on MMAjunkie.com.

The booking gives McKee the chance to extend his unbeaten streak to nine after a head-kick knockout of Dominic Mazzotta in April at Bellator 178. Notably, it also keeps the 22-year-old prospect on a parallel track with budding rival James Gallagher.

McKee and Gallagher seemed destined to meet with dueling post-fight callouts earlier this year. Gallagher in February called McKee a crass name for the female anatomy, and McKee mocked Gallagher after his April win.

Yet Gallagher was booked opposite Chinzo Machida in May at Bellator 180, and McKee is now booked against Tubman.

It appears Bellator’s intention is to build the featherweight prospects until there’s no other option but to pair them in a must-see fight. Just how long it takes to reach that point is anyone’s guess.

One thing is certain: Tugman can play spoiler if he’s able to beat McKee. With three recent wins to his credit, he is 5-2 in the Bellator cage.

With the addition, the current Bellator 182 lineup includes:

  • Andrey Koreshkov vs. Chidi Njokuani
  • Fernando Gonzalez vs. Brennan Ward
  • A.J. McKee vs. Blair Tubman

Georgi Karakhanyan vs. Daniel Pineda set for Bellator 182 in August

Bellator announced today that a featherweight bout between former World Series of Fighting champion Georgi Karakhanyan and UFC veteran Daniel Pineda has been set for Bellator 182.

Bellator 182, which is headlined by Andrey Koreshkov vs. Chidi Njokuani, takes place  Aug. 25 at Turning Stone Resort Casino in Verona N.Y. and airs on Spike TV. Karakhanyan-Pineda is slated for the prelims, which stream on MMAjunkie.

Karakhanyan (27-7-1 MMA, 6-6 BMMA) will enter looking to rebound from a tough loss in January at Bellator 170, dropping a majority decision to Emmanuel Sanchez. Prior to that setback, Karakhanyan was riding the momentum of back-to-back stoppage wins. In his second Bellator stint since losing the WSOF title in 2014, Karakhanyan is 3-3.

Pineda (22-12 MMA, 1-3 BMMA) has been on an upswing since leaving the UFC in 2014, winning four of five fights. That includes a submission victory in his most recent fight vs. Mark Dickman, who tapped out to a rear-naked choke last September at Bellator 161.

The Bellator 182 card includes:

  • Andrey Koreshkov vs. Chidi Njokuani
  • Fernando Gonzalez vs. Brennan Ward
  • A.J. McKee vs. opponent TBD
  • GKarakhanyan vs. Daniel Pineda
